Reaching Hermosillo, Mexico with the Gospel of Jesus Christ

Archive for October, 2008

changes within the IMB

Please pray for our leaders as the IMB goes through a process of reorganization and realignment to better address lostness in the world. At this point, we have a few of the details about the upcoming changes and this fact seems to be important: The closer to the actual field work, the less impact the upcoming changes will make. That is to say, more of the changes will affect structure and leadership. Those of us in the field, reaching the lost directly, will see less change.

Pray for our leadership!

october prayer requests

Please pray with us about the following:

1. Our health, safety, and wisdom

2. Our current church planting projects: Rancho Grande, Las Lomas, Casa de Dios. For the leaders of these new works.

3. The safety of our colleagues in the border cities.

4. Wisdom for Casa de Dios church as they seek the Lord concerning a new location–either something to rent or something to buy.

5. An upcoming summit that we will have to discuss what it’s going to take to have a major breakthrough in our work in the northwest of Mexico.

6. For our families in the U.S.

october in hermosillo

Thanks for your ongoing prayers for us here in Hermosillo. I thought I would write a quick update so you would know the latest.

Our work here continues on three fronts: in the far south of Hermosillo we are in the early stages of a project we have named Rancho Grande. We have a great team of nationals in place and expect to see some new believers very soon. We are looking forward to the arrival of a volunteer team from Eastwood Baptist Church, Haughton, Louisiana very soon. We’ll be doing our first gospel saturation in the area. This past Monday, our national team accomplished a prayerwalk in Rancho Grande. For most of them, it was their first time to prayerwalk and for us it was a pleasure to see them doing it.

In the southeast, we are working on a project called Las Lomas. We got some good news this week that there are some other families interested in joining in with us on this work. We hope to see a new church start in this area very soon. Thank you for your prayers for the G. family. They are an integral part of this work and seem to be bouncing back after a difficult time in their lives.

One thing we have learned here in Mexico is that ministry is not always neat and tidy and predictable. We are faced with real life situations that challenge us and our partners to remain true to the Word and to each other. More that once I have had to say, “They didn’t teach me that in seminary!” But God is good and with every new situation that we face, we grow.

Our third front is on the north side. The Casa de Dios church project is now at 2 1/2 years. We have faced some setbacks along the way, but the group is growing numerically and spiritually. Our big challenge has been to train and empower leadership so that we can step aside and move on to another project. Many of the challenges here are the same as in the states. There is very much an atmosphere of consumerism among believers. Many want to come to church to be fed, rather than to participate. It’s a constant struggle to get people to understand that they must step up and serve. I think it’s particularly difficult in a culture where the predominate religion (catholicism) teaches the people relate to God through the clergy. But we are optimistic that leaders are growing, albeit slowly, and that one day we will see them bearing much fruit.

On the Lighter Side

We have been healthy this month. My gastritis is much better and I am finished with my prescriptions. I am supposed to see the doctor again in November, but it should be a routine visit. Donna is well, too. She is on the perpetual diet and this week is eating a lot of cabbage soup. Yuck! We are exercising most days at the gym and yearning for a break in the hot weather so that we can spend more time outside.

In regard to that, it’s still really hot here. Today’s forecast calls for sunny skies and 103 degrees. The 10 day forecast shows it cooling off slightly by the 31st, but we will have had 16 or 17 days of 100+ weather in October. How’s that for autumn?

Please read the next post for our current prayer requests.

urgent prayer request

A situation has developed in one of our northwest cities concerning a Mexican national partner. We ask you to urgently pray for this brother and his family during what is literally a life and death situation. God knows the details and I am unable to share more about this in this blog.

time flies

I suppose that many of you think that I fell off the planet. I just realized that 35 days have passed since my last post. Sorry about that! It’s not that we haven’t been busy. In fact, we’ve been traveling a bit this past 35 days, so we’ve been very much out of our routine.

A few weeks back we headed out to Tijuana for a cell church conference with our partners and colleagues the Larners and the Wakefields. The conference was informative and well-attended. Our colleagues are doing a great job of casting vision before the people to plant multiple new churches using the cell strategy. We were pleased to see more than 12 local churches interested in receiving the training. As you know, Tijuana is a large city which is growing at an exponential. And Tijuana has it’s share of problems with drugs and crime. The people really need the Lord.

We just returned from participating in a missions celebration with the churches of the Top O’ Texas Baptist Association in the Texas panhandle. We’ve had a relationship with this group for about 3 years. It was good to renew our friendships and to cast vision for 2009 and beyond. We think that we’ll see several of these churches working with us in Hermosillo in the months to come.

Our work here in Hermosillo continues. We are excited to be launching our newest project–Rancho Grande–during October. We’ll be prayerwalking and training our team over the next several weeks. We look forward to a Louisiana volunteer team who will help us with the first literature distribution in the Rancho Grande area.

We seem to be past any health issues. My acid reflux is much improved–actually almost all gone. I’ll see the doctor again in a few weeks but expect it to be a routine visit.

That’s all for now. Thanks for your faithful prayers for us.
